About me

Oh hey there! I’m Christy, a Michigan-based, elder Millennial quilter with a mischievous corgi and foot pedal presser named Dewey.

My adventures in quilting began when I bought a sewing machine at JoAnn (RIP) and decided to make my friend a tote bag for her birthday! Having not touched a sewing machine since middle school home ec. class (I still have the bag I made then, by the way!), I watched about 200 YouTube tutorials on sewing and decided I was ready to go buy fabric. I made the mistake of buying a bunch of different fabrics without knowing which pattern I was making yet, and when I landed on a pattern I liked, I found I didn’t have enough fabric of any one kind to do the larger side panels. But I had more than enough total fabric. So what did I do? Of course I cut them into smaller pieces and sewed them back together!

After going down that rabbit hole I just started making quilts for my friends and family and the rest is history. I found that I have a passion for making tutorials and helping other beginner quilters find their way through every step of the process. I even have a series called Brand New Baby Quilter in case you want to start making quilts but it sounds too scary!

Design-wise, I am drawn to modern quilts with lots of color and pizazz. I have a homemade quilt catalog template to track all the patterns I’ve purchased over the last couple years. If the world stopped churning out new patterns (and if I stopped buying fabric) right now, it would take me years to run out of inspiration! But alas! I keep buying patterns and fabric!

Mediocre Quilter

Movement

A well-meaning member of the quilt police once commented on one of my TikTok videos that if I wanted to continue making mediocre quilts, I should keep using steam on my seams. I made a clap back video about how I actually pride myself on making mediocre quilts. I then proceeded to share many of the mediocre quilts I’d made to date and how loved they were. Point being…your quilt doesn’t have to be perfect. I am not your source of advice for show quilts! I’m making quilts for gifts and for my own use for the most part. This whole ordeal is how I found my quilty tribe! People who just love making quilts. Maybe they are beginners, maybe not. Either way, they are not walking around judging other people’s quilts for imperfections.

The word mediocre took on a new meaning, so if you see people commenting in my videos that something is mediocre, it’s a compliment now!

More important to me is whether my quilts are DONE, beautiful (either to me or the recipient), and loved. A friend recently apologized to me that they used her baby quilt on the floor for tummy time to keep her baby’s face off the rug. Umm, that’s what it’s for! I’ve also had a friend tell me her cats have barfed on the Cats on Cats on Cats quilt that I gave her. Hey, it’s washable!

Now that I am diving into pattern design, I’ve tightened the reins a little for the purposes of cover quilts, but I remain happy to get “close enough” for most projects. And when I write more patterns I plan to keep the beginner and mediocre quilters in mind. Here’s how you can trim your flying geese, but guess what, some of them will be imperfect, and here’s how to get the most out of them!
